Don’t make a big deal of Shah Rukh’s detention:One For The Road:Anand Soondas's blog-The Times Of India (http://blogs.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/onefortheroad/entry/don-t-make-a-big)
One For The RoadDont make a big deal of Shah Rukhs detention
After a long time actor Salman Khan has come up with a real gem. On hearing about Shah Rukh Khan being questioned by US security at Newark, New Jersey, he said its good that the country has such a tight set-up. And that ``there has been no attack after 9/11 because of this.
Salman has a point. SRK might be an icon to Indians and many in the subcontinent, even to the desi diaspora spread across the globe, but to America hes just a visitor. We may be convinced he cannot be involved in anything thats remotely violent, but the guard given the responsibility of stopping something like 9/11 from happening in his country again will want to take no chances. And what is the possibility that hes a die hard fan of the Khan and Bollywood? Very slim.
Interestingly, the same day that SRK was detained in Newark, there came news that the great Bob Dylan, who was wandering around Long Branch, near New York City, sometime back, was asked for an ID by two cops too young to know who he really was. When he couldnt furnish one, he was taken right back to the resort where he was putting up and staff there vouched for him. And America is Dylans own country.
Was there a furore? Not that I know of. Not even a little blowin' in the wind.
SRK says hes ``upset and angry because it was his Muslim name that caused all this. Thousands of Muslims are made to go through extra security checks everyday in America and a host of Western countries. Is he equally upset at that? He's probably just pissed that it happened to him, India's mega star. We all know how a lot of Muslims have been subjected to prejudice around the world because many countries see terrorism as an Islamic phenomenon. Yes, it is uncalled for, unjust and maybe wrong. But America is a country that takes the killings of its people with the seriousness it deserves, unlike India whose record on this is shameful, to say the least.
Also, because most of the perpetrators of 9/11 were Muslims, America thinks it has to be doubly careful where they are concerned. Had the terrorists been Jews, perhaps it would have looked at Jews with similar suspicion. I was much more aggrieved at President Kalam being frisked. But thats a dated debate.
There are two layers to the SRK incident and we must peel them off with care. One, it is quite ridiculous that Indians feel their icons and superstars are everybodys icons and superstars. What the heck? If Jet Li came to India tomorrow, the man on the street here would probably call him `Chinky and not give a second look. For that matter, what if Grard Depardieu came travelling. How many would know him? Matt Damon was here recently and there wasnt a traffic jam in Delhi. These guys are huge back home.
Moreover, America doesnt have a culture of fawning the way India has. Mike Tyson was treated like a common rapist and spent most part of his youth in the slammer. Winona Ryder was sentenced to a three-year probation for shoplifting. Chinese born Hollywood actress Bai Ling was fined US 200 dollars for petty theft.
More importantly, we are actually aggrieved because we are ``not like them. Well, guess what. It isnt a virtue. We should be like them and take the security of our country and its people with solemn, no-nonsense professionalism. Frisk Brad Pitt when he lands in India next. Give Tom Cruise the same dose. Dont spare Bill Clinton either. Isnt he an ex-prez just like Kalam? Whos stopping you and whats stopping you? Colonial hangover? Or is it plain lethargy and callousness. Looks like both.
We are just whimpering over here like hurt puppies because we feel, ``Oh, but we dont do it to them. Oh no, we dont. And its a scandal. We should. Ive seen white men and women get away in India with murder. Indian women cant get into some discos wearing a sari. And bouncers will frown at you if you are dressed in a kurta. Have you seen what some of these firangs have on them? No one bats a eyelid.
So instead of making SRKs detention an issue, we should think of upgrading our own security set-up.
Theres a lesson in this. And it is a positive one. A day after our own 26/11, there was hardly any security at CST in Mumbai. It cant get worse than that. The bottom line: Stop fawning, shed the colonial hangover and make no compromise where the countrys safety is concerned. Can we do that or is it too much to ask from a country thats been free for 62 years but was ruled by white sahibs for 200?
Well said and perfect....in India there is a culture of babu where VIPs are not checked at all....otherwise the wrath of the high officer will strike on the junior officer.

Hi,
I found that priority date field on my I-140 receipt is empty. Will this create any problem??
I filed concurrently lasy july and MY PD will be current next month. I applied at NSC but got transferred to TSC.
Thanks for the answers
Your priority date is the date of your filing of your labor certification. Therefore, lack of the priority date on your I-140 receipt should not matter. Best of luck!

well said sayantan..
This whole idea of linking GC to probable purchasing homes..is insane!
it stops short of black mailing...
The 700Bn or whatever the final number is not entirely a drain.....
the thing with all these exotic securities is not that they are completely worthless but that there is no market for these right now and hence are illiquid - so if someone had the ability to keep these securities for a long term (say 30 years - since most mortgages are for 30 years) on their balance sheet - they may not lose as much money as they would if they tried to liquidate these investments in the short term.
Financial Institutions typically borrow short term to invest in long term investments and keep renewing the short term borrowings - since the underlying investment has become illiquid - it has become difficult to raise financing against it. the govt, howver, can take a long term view and be patient....who knows.....in the end - the Govt may actually come out with positive cash flow at the end of all this mess. So, the bail-out plan may not be as bad an idea as media is portraying it to be.........in short-term - it does take US into further indebtedness.
I already have a GC - so this debate does not impact me personally - but this is against the basic principals of natural justice.......GC applicants were placed into certain EB categories based on job descriptions and qualifications and then within queues assigned priority dates based on certain logic and are currently being approved based on PD and country quotas..........all these rules were known and published prior to companies and people applying for these GCs.....
No matter what the incremental benefit is, I think its blatantly unfair (like it was blatantly unfair to push some people to labor backlog centers and approving people with later PDs first) to change the rules of engagement and prioritization midway through the process and give preference to someone based on an ability to invest certain $$s in an house.......buying a house is a commercial and lifestyle decision........should not be a precursor to a USCIS adjudication.......
keep the red dots coming folks!

I completely agree that Substitute labor is being used is the wrong sense. My husband is now in his 7th year of H1B and I am still on H4.
At the same time our friend who came in 2005 to USA through an Indian company joined Rapidigm in 2005, received a 1999 priority date Labor and received his Green card (& for his wife too) in 8 months time.
This iextremely unfair means of acquiring GC and should be blocked legally.Meanwhile Rapidigm has been acquired by Fujitsu .
simple question, given an opportunity, where someone offer you sub labour with PD prior to 2001 does any one here reject the offer, this is a classic story of "ship of crabs from ...."
we have much bigger fish to fry than worry about few smart crabs getting out of ship.
sub labour is not illegal nor it is a loop hole, itz a simple deal between employer and employee for their own benifit.
letz focus our effort on making new congresss and senate understand our situation and provide some relife thru bills such as SKILL.

Dingudi,
I didn't generalize. I said preponderence meaning "a lot of" cases with L1/B1/H1 and I am also not denying the fact the India is doing a great job in producing IT skills in great numbers. I am saying how they end up in America in greater numbers than any other country. China, Pakistan, Israel also produces lots of IT gradutes but they don't have the bodyshop connection to land here with an NIIT certificate.
I am an Indian and also came as a student giving GRE/TOEFL. So do not generalize that IT workers from India came here via L1/B1 route. Some of them did but some did not. I know lot of Indian who came here to study.
If India is producing more people qualified in these skills then its not their fault.

I don't think waiting for GC will be such a big problem if we can get relief from Government related to flexibility in job change (just like after getting GC), option to opt for FT school, etc... We can request immediate relief to GC community that if their I-485 is pending for more than 2 years (say), they should be granted a temp. intermediate status which should allow them to change jobs which are not neccessarily similar or on same payscale, flexibility to opt as FT student if they want to..... If we get this flexibility, I don't think waiting for GC is going to hurt so much. We have tried so much to get the GC quota increased but nothing has worked. May be we should focus on small things like this first. Just thinking aloud.

When Gadnhiji advocated secularism for India he did so because he believed in "Sarva Mata Sama Bhava"(The equality of all religions in which most of us believe).
When religious conversions are made fundamental right as per constitution the word 'Secularism' became a farce.A farce used by religious groups (that use either terror/deceit,abuse for conversions) and also by Macaulian Indians
(Today in India Hindus&others are 70%,Muslims 20%, Christians 10%)
Once the head count , behind which most of the religious groups are running is reached , once the figures are toppled then the mantra will be dominate and destroy(as what happened in rest of the world be it Latin America or else where, stands as example), not secularism which will be reduced to joke by then.

Hmmm... Not sure what you mean about my opinion and mindset. I was only responding to your "accusation" of SL government destroying "competitiveness" by providing some facts openly known to almost all Sri Lankans but not in the outside world. Those facts also give you an insight in to the root cause of the problem. You are free to form any opinions about me. Just remember that there are two sides to each story. Look at both sides before you make a judgement.
As for your wish wanting to see Sinhalese and Tamils living as equals in a peaceful sri lanka, we all share that sentiment with you and Thank you for that. Hopefully that day is not too far.
Panini, This is the kind of opinion and mindset is causing the problem. Your reply tells more than the report i provided. I want to see singalese and tamils living peacefully and with equal rights in SL.
I pray god everyday for that only. Every human being is same, Getting discriminated and discriminating people is so stone age mindset.

May YSR's soul rest in peace. I am not YSR fan but he is no more... So what good, what bad?
Pls, it is cheap to reveal anyone's identity, posting personal details, and this kind of behavior on these posts. Pls stop bickering... In the free country like US, be tolerant enough to listen to others even though you don't agree with a person.
IV core, pls delete this thread, it's disgusting and embarrassing.
mmk123,
Do you agree that YSR was a gunda, a land grabber, political killer who amassed huge amounts of illegal wealth and land, never ever seen in the history of AP? You claim that you are not a fan of YSR. If that is the case then give due credit where required and criticize and condemn when its appropriate.
Any Sympathy for that gunda YSR is like accepting that he is guilt free of all his corrupt actions, land grabbing and amassing illegal wealth.
These people who are picking on ChanduV23 as they have nothing else to the fact that YSR is a gunda.

Also I expressed to take the "Global icon" tag out of the picture and focus on the system itself. Make sure you read and understand posts before rhetorical reactions.
The system is working very well the way it was designed. As some one already pointed out blame it on osama bin laden. Not on the DHS

Good Things about IV
1. IV Core does not conduct its business in the forum. They learnt this lesson a long time ago.
2. All their work is done in the donor forum and behind the scenes by volunteers
3. If they feel that any idea is worth pursuing they invite that person (with the idea) behind the scenes and pursue that idea
4. All the work is done by IV members themselves because they are helping themselves
5. IV members are investing time and money to do work which impacts a large number of immigrants
6. That is a professional way to do stuff and i admire the way work is done at IV
Concerns of IV
1. IV always states about the lack of will of people to do something for themselves
2. IV always states that people just comment on forum but do not step forward to do stuff
3. IV always says that people do not donate enough and without donation a grassroot organization will not survive
What IV is doing wrong
1. IV talks about a holistic approach whereby the benefit to EB community will trickle down and once EB2 will become current EB3 will get benefit of spillover
2. IV is assuming EB2 will become current but with the number of indians coming to USA and number of indian students who will graduate from MS courses in USA over the next 5 years EB2I will always be backlogged
3. Plus we are not even talking about EB2 ROW and EB3ROW demand which could go up
4. Supporting the DV 55k bill to US educated GC applicants on the whole looks like a great plan. Sure here are 55k and here are about 150 k GC applicants. 150 - 50 IS 100 K. So if the bill passes we reduce the backlog by 50 k. Now i will am one of the person who will be getting a GC because i am US educated but my opposition to this bill is on principle
5. What IV has to realise is that it is not only IV members specifically but it is a whole lot of non IV members who are EB3 who have been a bigger person in this whole immigration retorgression advocacy scheme of things till now.
How let me explain. We have seen EB3 persons from 2002 who are still waiting for GC and who are not getting spill over visas because EB2 is using up all the spill over visas. So do you see any EB3 now complaining about the rule change supported by IV and made by USCIS whereby EB2 gets spill over visas. NO we do not see any EB3 complaining. That is because EB3 as a whole understands that that rule in the past being interpeted in a wrong way and the current way is the correct interpetation. Sure the old method gave EB3 some extra spill over visa benefit but the new interpetation caused EB3 to dry up compleletly. Now that in itself is against the very nature of self preservation by definition, But EB3 went along for the greater good
What IV can do right
1. Now we have this 55K DV Bill. This is something different from the spillover (which is law and cannot be changed). This is one time oppurtunity to alieviate the sufferings of EB group as a whole. So can IV which is supposed to be talking for the whole EB community do the right thing here and ensure (with advocacy they are so good at) that IV's stand is that 55K visa are given to all GC applicant from retrogressed countries based on oldest priority date first irrespective of EB2 and EB3.
2. The concequence of such a move is that long retrogressed EB applicants will get relief (Which is one of the point IV talks about in their charter)
3. Sure Many US educated applicants from EB2 and EB3 will oppose this move because lets face it, this move impacts their getting GC sooner. And if they behave like that they are in the same category as EB2 guys on this forum who do not entertain any idea which will impact their getting GC soon.
What wil happen if IV does the above
1. The DV 55K bill will NEVER pass in congress. This along with the other bills we have seen will bite the dust because no one in the current economic scenario would like to see more immigrants (US educated or not)
2. The DV 55K bill will fail but IV would have achieved what it has failed to do till now. Get the support of EB3 community which they claim to represent.
Synopsis
How how does this work. This is a suggestion for discussion NOT a diktat to IV core to implement. If IV core does not allow discussion on this (and moderate this because frankly some of your existing advocacy group members and volunteers do not know what a discussion is and come out both fists swinging) then that is IV core perogative. they have that right since this is their system and they worked hard for it, and they believe what they say is right.
One question i do have for all the members who have argued with me here. Have you seen all the discussion i have participated under and my other posts. Please do that before yelling that i was a member since 2006 and freeloader and all that. You need to do this because if i am you enemy (Scounderal, Liad weed, Anti Immgrant, Future USA etc) then don't you think to know your enemy is better.
On a funny flip side ...............................
How will this be treated by the current members
Ohh He is a liar, cheat, sounderrl, absurer, voilent person, free loader, smooch, weed, Anti Immgrant, future USA and other unspeakable things
By the way guys i am a She not a He

I have been waiting for 4.5 years, renewed 4 times EAD/AP, spent more than 8K(wife dosen't work and having 2 kids). If there is no sub labor system, I would have got long back.
One of my friends informed me about immigrationvoice.com few months back, I am EB3 with PD Jan 2003 and currently waiting to file I-485 for last one year. It is frustrating to hear how some of the companies are bypassing and jumping ahead on the line. I thought I get some opinion; I am curious why this isn't being bunged. Although using a pre-approved labor is a legal thing, how much of sagacity does it really have? Within my little 10-12 friend circle I have had atleast FOUR people who got their GC within 8 months through this same company - KFORCE, Rapidigm Inc., utilizing pre-approved labor. It seems this company lures people with a condition that they will process their GC within couple of months, isn't this using the legal system at their business advantage.
What can we do to stop this, it is frustrating to me as I am waiting for close to four years with my GC process and been in the US for 7 years. At the same time, I see people who have been in the US for 2 years has their GC. To me this legal system does not make any sense and is a clear proof of injustice. I am thinking of talking to a legal attorney to see if this makes a justifiable case and if possible file a lawsuit for scrutiny against this company or any company that uses this facility for their benefit. May be I am overreacting and this is the reason I am posting it here to get an opinion, what do you guys think ?

I had green dots till yesterday, but after posting fun stuff on this thread people gave me red dots..... why is that? This tread has zero value, it is like Santa singh jokes.
Looks like people are so serious in their life that they cannot understand difference between fun and real stuff...
This thread was for fun so I posted funny things....pls don't give me red for this
Thanks Rohan, Iam glad that we clarified the mis-understanding and that I have not lost a good friend due to some confusion. I have not given any red dots for any of your posts rest assured.

First, please stop comparing companies in this thread at least because we are diverting from topic.
I am totally convinced with users like jetflyer, kondur_007 and others that if it goes smooth then next will be EAD, then I-485 approvals.
At least this is the time to think beyond boundaries (like EB-3, EB-2, working as FT, working with consulting company, states and countries), if not then dont distract the efforts.

"Now with this huge deluge of immigrants, especially from the desi consulting companies, I feel that my quality of life is getting adversely impacted. Do not rush to conclusions that I am anti Indian or anti immigrant. 12 years back when I first got my H1 visa, the requirements to qualify were strict. "
i am not interested in giving red or blue dots but i do hope your citizenship application gets stuck in a processing delay, you too will then realize the implication of your so called Darwinian flush  As they say...when it happens to others its a recession, when it happens to you it turns into a depression...good luck..
I hope your post did not imply that the ones who got GC's were the 'brightest and the best'.
My intention was not to devalue the merits of the incoming batch of immigrants. As I said, around 20% of the group are truly the best and the brightest. This was the case after the dotcom crash and will most likely be the case going forward. We had the same delays, retrogressions , guaranteed employment verification RFEs etc. Immigrationportal.com used to be the immigrationvoice of the times. I do not see much difference for the techies between what was then and what is going on now in terms of delays. I see 2 dramatic changes though
1. People arent patient enough during these times. You would agree to the amount of venting going on in this site.
2. The incessant dumping of low cost of L1s by the outsourcing companies.
If you think through deeply, the second point is what is causing all the heartburn among the people waiting for their GCs. Believe me. All these extrapolated timelines that scream that getting GC today would take 10 years are all bogus. These headlines were the same then too. I can confidently say that the GC process will move fast within a year's time once the layoffs stop. It is just that can you survive till the govt policies become more rational ? That is where the argument about the best and the brightest come into place. If you are one, you would survive this and you will get your GC within 3 years. Honestly, my ntention was to calm the nerves of those people genuinely talented and waiting for their GCs. If I had missed out on that count, I think I should improve my communication. The arwinian flush was just to highlight that fact.

I completely agree with you...it was Nehru who screwed up the country.
I really feel that you are brainwashed and immatured. Although Nehru might have made some mistakes like China war, what did India really lose in that war? And how many years since then India has had to fix the problem? You should also read about Nehru's sacrifices and his movements along side Mahatma Gandhi that earned the nation its freedom.
Now you have chosen to be a secondary citizen/ slave in america is a different matter altogether, but many back home in India are thankful they are free and independent nation.

It happens everywhere. Politicans bank on these stars - stars get along well with businessmen, politicians fight and then kiss each other. Stars marry, divorce, remarry - and the list goes on.
Come on, it happens everywhere, not only in India. How many times do you not see 80 year old rich businessman marrying 26 year old beautiful model?
Look at how the bailout money has gone to those people who screwwed the economy.
The reason you think India has issues that other countries do not have is because you are still not stepping out of your Indian shoes.
Go out with your American friends for a drink and discuss these issues - for every issue you discuss - you will get a parallel American counter issue that is similar in nature.
There is nothing called "absolute" in this world and you will realise it now or later. Live in a country side with a constant income and you will find life peaceful because you are not bothered by what is happening.
Or try helping people - and do social service - you will realise that it is a dangerous and thankless job.
Democracy is "not exactly" how it sounds. Unfortunately, life is not fair to anyone and one has to live in within his/her means.
Crying foul over all such stuff will not bring changes. Working within parameters to bring about changes is "unfortunately" the only way how changes have come to the "Mother Earth"
snathan - you are a very strong vocal person and have great thoughts. You must utilize your "good hearted nature" not to point fingers but to see how best you can utilize and grab opportunities for betterment.
There are worse things happening in places like congo and African countries, small girls being raped , civil wars , and so many things.
Diseases are spreading, sanitation is bad, farmers are facing drought - so many things happening. Lets not blame SOME PEOPLE for all this. it is us collectovely who can bring about change.
Do you mean to say if one american actor/actress is frisked away at Mumbai or delhi airport, americans will go to street and burn the indian flag..? GOA will go after the indian security and customs...? I am not blaming anything about SRK. I am blaming common man, GOI....most importantly the OP who started the thread for SRK....well this is my last post here and I dont want to waste my time on a useless issue.
